A fashion, beauty, and travel influencer based out of Surat, Gujarat, has recently stirred up the internet by posting a reel showcasing her daughter eating food on the floor because she was on her period. Netizens got irked by her caption taking pride in an age-old orthodox tradition that considers women and girls impure during menstruation.
As the comments started schooling the influencer, she deleted the reel, but we got our hands on the screenshot of what some people were saying on the internet.
Surat Woman Takes Pride In Daughter Eating On The Floor During Periods
Rupal Mitul Shah is a Surat-based influencer who is known to give her fans insight into her makeup and skincare routine, travel itineraries, and fashionable wardrobe. While her fans appreciate her efforts, this time, it did not sit well with the internet.
Shah recently shared a video on Instagram in which she was seen glorifying the fact that her daughter was sitting on the floor and eating while she was menstruating.
She mentioned in her caption that her family follows a strict lifestyle in which a menstruating woman or girl cannot come in skin contact with another member of the family.
This orthodox practice stems from the belief that menstruating women and girls are impure. Many people still believe that during period (Period Myths), women and girls should sleep on the floor, not cook the food, not touch anything around the house, not enter the temple premises, and eat their meals while sitting on the floor.

Though she turned off comments on the social media platform, people on X (formally known as Twitter (Twitter New Features)) shared their views. One user wrote, “Bro???!!! The caption???? You’re telling me and your daughter ‘love to follow’ a tradition that treats women as untouchables for … a normal bodily function? And you’re not gonna try changing that?
Another user on the social media platform wrote, “Some influencer has posted a reel of her family in a posh looking house sitting on the dining table & eating, then the video cuts to her sitting on the floor a little away from them & eating her food. In the caption, she mentions that it’s because she’s on her period. Great culture!”

An influencer with 297k followers on Instagram posts such derogatory reels supporting orthodox beliefs, it can create a ripple effect on society which is progressing at the pace of a snail. In today’s world, influencers are no less than celebrities who can create a huge impact on society depending on what they share on their platform.
While many people are using their privilege and creativity to bring positive change in the world, videos like Shah posted push that progress backwards. As mentioned in Spider-Man Marvel comics, “With great powers there must also come great responsibility,” influencers need to take responsibility for the type of content they share on social media.
