Recently, Katrina Kaif became the talk of the town as the new Punjabi bahu in Bollywood after tying the knot with actor Vicky Kaushal on December 9, 2021. One of her Punjabi wedding rituals called chaunka chardhana made it to the headlines after she posted a picture from the ceremony on social media.
In her Instagram post, she shared a glimpse of the wedding ritual at her and Kaushal’s house a couple of days after the wedding. She shared a picture of a bowl of halwa in her Instagram story which is a part of the chaunka chardhana ritual.
Captioning the picture as, “Chaunka Chardhana” with a smiling emoticon, Kaif wrote, “Maine banaya” indicating the halwa.

What Is Chauka Chardhana?
This ritual is performed two days after the wedding where a newlywed bride or bahu cooks for the first time in the house which is preferably a sweet dish. Usually, the brides make halwa or kheer for the ritual. Following this, the elder relatives of the groom’s family or the in-laws gift the bride shagun or presents in return.
Punjabi Wedding Rituals
The flamboyant and big fat Punjabi weddings have several common as well as unheard unique rituals and lots of food and dance. The wedding rituals begin with the roka ceremony which take place on a shubh muhrat that is mutually decided by both families. On this day, the families exchange gifts and cash and the would-be bride’s uncle gives her nose ring that she would be wearing on the wedding day.
Following this, the sagai ceremony takes place which is also called tikka ceremony, which is held a week or 10 days before the wedding. In this ceremony, the bride’s family visit’s the groom with gifts and the tikka material comprising a silver tray with a few grains of rice and saffron in a tiny silver bowl, 14 chuharey covered with silver foil and a coconut wrapped in a gold leaf.

This is followed by sagan, chunni chadhana, sangeet, mehendi, and the main wedding ceremony.
