Motherhood is a rewarding experience but it’s overwhelming as well, especially when you are a new mother struggling to find time to rest and rejuvenate. Additionally, mothers are often been posed as guilty for taking out time for themselves, whether they are working or they are investing in themselves. Ahead of Mother's Day 2025, we spoke to moms to understand why it’s important for moms to prioritise ‘Me Time’.

Why ‘Me Time’ Matters For New Moms?

Here’s why ‘Me Time’ is important for new moms:

Focus On Well-Being

A mother’s self-care isn’t an indulgence- but a necessity. Taking out time allows mothers to focus on their overall wellbeing which includes mental health and physical health which often takes a toll when you embrace motherhood. Mahima Bhatnagar said, “

“This is because while fulfilling the responsibility of a mother, we forget to take care of ourselves. Because of this, we feel negative all the time. Therefore, it is important to relax your mind. So give yourself time without any guilt.”

“I too forgot my mom's guilt and planned to go out for a walk. This made me realise that there are many things in my life which are incomplete and I need to experience them. This gave me a chance to explore something new. Also, I was able to enjoy my mom's journey again with a fresh mind,” Mahima added.

If Not Me, Then Who?

When a baby enters the family, the focus somehow shifts towards him. But what about the mother? Pallabi Chatterjee said, “Because if not me, who will? After delivery, the baby is always the priority for everyone. Hardly anyone bothers about the new mother. So, if you wait for someone to notice and take care of you, then it's not arriving anytime soon. Also, if you go on neglecting yourself, there will come a time when these things will come crashing down on you and wreck you mentally and emotionally. So, better not take that risk."

Mom’s Guilt

There is an unspoken assumption that a mother should be selfless and should only focus on her child. So, stepping out of that mindset might make you feel like you are a bad mother. But, if your child is safe and happy, there is no point howling over that guilt that society poses on you. “As long as your kids are in safe hands while you focus on yourself, it’s absolutely pointless to surround yourself with guilt,” said Alka Srivastava.

Fosters A Responsible Child

Mrs Alka highlighted an overlooked fact that when a mother values herself and her time, it significantly impacts the child’s growth and development. Like it’s said- “At a tender age, children are like wet clay — they can be gently shaped by the values and guidance they receive.”

Alka mentioned that a mother who values her time raises an independent, disciplined, and responsible child. The child learns to value time and never has a casual approach to life. Additionally, such kids are good with managing their life and emotions, as they grow up watching their mom as a strong woman.

A Happy Mom Means A Healthy Baby

It’s no surprise that a happy mom means a happy and healthy child.

Anuradha Gupta highlighted that taking out some me time when you have a child is no doubt a challenge. But it’s equally important.

Every mom needs time for herself. If you aren’t happy, it becomes hard to raise a happy child. When you're emotionally drained or constantly overwhelmed, it reflects in your behaviour. You may become irritable, feel lazy or unmotivated, and even struggle to feel joyful around your own child, added Mrs Gupta.

Anuradha further added that when you take a little time for yourself, to do something that brings you peace, joy, or simply a mental break, it recharges you. The satisfaction and inner happiness that comes from that space will reflect in everything you do afterwards. You'll show up with more love, energy, and presence for your child.

And as for what others say, remember, ‘Kuch To Log Kahenge Logon Ka kam hai Kehna.’ Don’t let their unsolicited advice affect you. What truly matters is your peace, your joy, and your bond with your baby, concluded Anuradha.
