Khan, who is debuting with Qala, remembered his father, late actor Irrfan Khan, at the trailer launch of the film last evening. He said that he wishes to explore his own qualities, talent, and skills rather than imitate the same charm his father had on the screen. “Mere father ki jo khoobiyan thi woh leke chale gaye, ab mein apni khoobiyan explore karunga (My father took his qualities with him, now I’ll explore mine).”
Khan began shooting the film a few months after Irrfan Khan passed away in April 2020 and he mentioned that he was under a “lot of pressure” at the time. “Two years ago, when we were shooting, that time also the pressure was there. It would overwhelm me, it would scare me but now it motivates me to do better and work. The definition of pressure has changed now,” he said.
Khan is as intense, philosophical, and introspective as his father and thinks that the thought of being in control of our own journey is an “illusion”. Talking about future ventures in films, he said, “Because we have this illusion, we think we are in control of our journey, we are not. I will improvise with what life throws at me. I want to explore everything, I want to do all kinds of films and play all kinds of characters. I want to just explore, that’s it.”
Set in the 1940s, Qala chronicles the complicated relationship between a young singer Dimri and her mother played by Mukherjee. The psychological thriller is a tale of war of music as it narrates the rollercoaster journey of Dimri becoming a singer and making it to the top until Khan, who is described as a ‘maestro’ by his peers, enters her life.
