7 Plants That Don't Need Seeds To Grow

Potato

The humble potato grows from underground tubers rather than seeds. Those small ‘eyes’ on a potato are actually buds. When you plant a potato (or even a cut piece with an eye) in soil, these buds sprout into shoots and roots, eventually forming a completely new plant. This straightforward method makes potatoes easy to cultivate at scale.

Ginger

Ginger spreads through rhizomes, which are horizontal underground stems. If you plant a small piece of ginger root with a visible node, it will develop roots beneath the soil and shoots above it. This efficient system allows gardeners to multiply ginger plants with very little effort.

Onion

Onions grow from bulbs, layered storage organs that sit beneath the soil. When you plant a bulb, it sends up green shoots and establishes new roots. Even a portion of a bulb can regenerate into another onion plant, which is why onions are often propagated without seeds in kitchens and farms alike.

Garlic

Garlic works in a similar way to onions. Each clove acts as an individual planting unit. When you place a single clove in the soil, it develops roots and shoots, eventually forming a full garlic bulb. This makes garlic one of the easiest crops to grow at home.

Mint

Mint is known for spreading quickly, sometimes a little too enthusiastically. It grows through underground stems and runners that travel beneath the soil. These runners produce new shoots at intervals. You can also grow mint from cuttings placed in water or soil, where they quickly develop roots.

Banana

Most cultivated bananas do not grow from seeds. Instead, farmers propagate them using suckers, shoots that emerge from the base of the parent plant. These offshoots grow into mature banana plants that are genetically identical to the original, ensuring consistent fruit quality.

Strawberry
