To reach the world's largest internet population outside of China, Perplexity AI is launching its Comet browser in India. However, the browser is only available to paying subscribers.

The new AI-first browser, which can handle tasks like shopping, scheduling, and research, is now available to Perplexity Pro subscribers on Windows and macOS. It can be pre-ordered for Android devices, with iOS support expected to be added later.

In a LinkedIn post on Monday, Aravind Srinivas, the co-founder, president, and CEO of Perplexity AI, revealed the launch of the new product.

The company's CEO, Srinivas, previously had said that the Comet AI browser is more of an active ‘thinking partner’ than a passive browsing tool, representing a move away from simply ‘browsing to thinking’.

What Can The Comet Browser Do

Comet combines a standard chromium-based browsing interface with a powerful, ‘agentic’ AI assistant that is always active in a sidebar. This AI is capable of independently performing multi-step tasks across multiple tabs, such as comparing prices, summarising research, scheduling meetings, or even completing transactions when you authorise it to.

Perplexity states that Comet's design is meant to reduce browser clutter and maintain context across different projects and tasks, instead of treating each webpage as a separate entity.

For privacy and security, Comet keeps all browsing history and AI interactions on the user's device, with end-to-end encryption. The browser also works with popular password managers. To attract businesses, Perplexity is promoting Comet’s enterprise-level features, such as administrative controls and compliance certifications.

Launch In India

Perplexity is making a strong push into India, which has the world's largest online population after China, by launching its new Comet AI browser. To gain a foothold in this market, the company has partnered with Bharti Airtel to offer millions of its customers a one-year complimentary subscription to Perplexity Pro. This move, along with its efforts to hire local talent, signals a commitment to a significant expansion within the country.

Perplexity’s decision to launch in India is a strategic one, as the country provides a large, tech-savvy user base that is ready to adopt ‘Agentic AI’ in their daily routines, even as other markets remain hesitant. However, it's not without challenges. It remains to be seen how regulators and content publishers will respond to a browser that scrapes, summarises, and takes actions across the internet. Additionally, there is the question of whether major players like Google and Microsoft will counter this move by incorporating similar AI-powered features into their own browsers.
