On the first Thursday of February each year, people worldwide come together to celebrate Optimist Day. This day serves as a platform for Optimist groups across the globe to volunteer their time and expertise, particularly in initiatives geared towards supporting local youth. These initiatives encompass a range of programmes focusing on leadership, sports, wellness, safety, and the arts.
According to Optimist International, on this day group members actively promote their efforts, creating awareness within their communities about the positive impact they are making in the lives of young individuals. Furthermore, various governments at the local level take the opportunity to recognise and honour these volunteers, acknowledging their dedication, skills, and contributions.
Optimist Day, traditionally observed on the first Thursday of February annually, will be celebrated on February 1, this year. The initiative to officially recognise Optimist Day in Quebec was set in motion in early 2013 by Sylvain Levesque, a member of the Lorretteville Optimist Club and the Quebec National Assembly. Subsequently, during the Optimist International Convention in Cincinnati later that year, delegates voted on a resolution to declare the first Thursday of February as Optimist Day to be observed each year.

The choice of the first Thursday in February for Optimist Day was explained by Mr. Levesque, who stated according to Hindustan Times, "It was because we normally start our work at the National Assembly in the first week of February, and we could pass the resolution at that moment." This strategic timing aligned with the commencement of their activities at the National Assembly, facilitating the passage of the resolution during this period.

On Optimist Day, Optimist International clubs and their members actively raise awareness (mental health awareness) within their communities about their ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of young individuals. This is achieved through various means, including celebrating the annual day and proudly wearing Optimist insignia. As part of their outreach efforts, Optimist Clubs often choose a specific venue and distribute copies of the Optimist Creed, encouraging others to embrace optimism in their own lives.

In addition to the clubs and individual members observing Optimist Day, many local governments regularly issue proclamations acknowledging the significance of the day. This collective recognition encourages communities to look toward the future with hope. It serves as a platform to honour the dedicated volunteers who generously contribute their time, energy, and talents on Optimist Day, working towards the shared goal of creating a bright and tranquil tomorrow.
