Nag Panchami History

Nag Panchami honours the serpent deities, known as Nagas, revered across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions in India and Nepal. One key legend says in the Mahabharata, when sage Astika stopped King Janamejaya’s snake sacrifice (Sarpa Satra) on the Shukla Paksha Panchami of Shravan month, thus sparing the serpent race. King Janamejaya was doing this to take revenge on Takshaka, the king of the snakes, who killed his father.
