Meet Tamanna Sharma, The Entrepreneur Behind India's First Sustainable Event Waste Management Startup

In today’s world, where massive events produce tons of waste in terms of plastics and food, one person has revolutionised the management of events in India. Tamanna Sharma, who is an environmental activist and previously a journalist, started her company called Earthling First, which is the first-of-its-kind startup in India working on sustainable event waste management. Motivated by their mission of transforming waste into a valuable resource, their team organises zero-waste events like festivals, marathons, and corporate expos.

Who Is Tamanna Sharma?

Tamanna Sharma is an environmental activist, author, and social entrepreneur who is popularly known for being the founder and director of Earthling First. Coming from a military background, Tamanna worked as a journalist and radio presenter covering environmental issues. 

As a person desirous of making tangible change in ecology and not only in creating awareness about the issue, she decided to shift from journalism to activism and consultancy in the realm of climate, making waste management her forte.

How Tamanna Sharma Started Her Entrepreneurial Journey

Her entrepreneurial story began when she witnessed an eye-opening scenario at a government event marking World Environment Day. 

Although the event itself revolved around environmentally friendly themes, the venue remained littered with large volumes of non-biodegradable waste. This led her to take action within the economic realm. 

Capitalising on the Startup India program that began in 2016, she founded her venture called Earthling First, which is a solo sustainability consulting service that focuses on the concept of a circular economy through events.

What Is India's First Sustainable Event Waste Management Startup?

Earthling First is the first startup and consultancy that provides sustainable event waste management services in India. Following the principle of seeing waste not as waste but as an asset, Earthling First plans and executes zero-waste events for event planners, social enterprises, and corporations. 

The startup assists organisations in incorporating sustainability into their budget and turns large public events like marathons, music festivals, and corporate expos into eco-friendly events.

Her Challenges and Achievements

During its early stages, Earthling First had to overcome many financial and sceptical challenges in the industry that didn't take event sustainability seriously at all. Having overcome these challenges, Tamanna took her business to over 22 Indian cities and was able to provide waste management solutions for large-scale national events, including the Maruti Suzuki Devil Circuit and BSF meetings. 

Apart from events, she initiated The Jalori Project to fight against the spread of plastic pollution on the high-altitude mountain paths in Himachal Pradesh and started another social venture named Sustained Labs to educate people about climate change. It is important to mention that she created a socially inclusive workforce with 50% women.
