Lightning Strikes Claim 25 Lives In Bihar, 22 In Uttar Pradesh Amidst Thunderstorm Alert

Around 50 people in Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand lost their lives to deadly lightning strikes on Thursday.

More than 45 people lost their lives in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand followed by a deadly downpour marked by thunderstorms and lightning. While 22 people died in UP, 22 fatalities were reported in Bihar. In Uttarakhand, lightning claimed the life of a 40-year-old male farmer in the Sunkhari village of Udham Singh Nagar district.

Bihar’s Siwan district accounted for two deaths, one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad districts. Ten more people died in separate districts across Bihar, including Patna, Jehanabad, and Bhagalpur, due to lightning strikes. This follows 25 similar deaths in eight districts just a day before. Most of the victims were farmers or daily wage workers who were caught in the storms while working in the fields.

IMD Issues An Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for several districts, including Darbhanga, East Champaran, and Patna, warning of heavy rainfall in the region. Residents are advised to be prepared for the expected downpour, which is forecasted to hit on Friday and Saturday.

"Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at few places over Madhubani, Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada, Patna," the IMD said in a bulletin.

CM Announces Ex Gratia Payment To Victims

Besides the lives of a number of people, the deadly weather has also caused widespread damage to power infrastructure in the city, toppling 320 electricity poles. CM Nitish Kumar gave his condolences to the families who lost their members and also announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each victim. Also, in UP, where rain was recorded in 36 districts, CM Yogi Adityanath announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to each of the families. He urged the officials to rescue the victims, assess damage to crops and livestock, and disburse compensation to affected farmers.
