The official theme for International Yoga Day 2025 is ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’. The theme was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann Ki Baat address on March 30, 2025.
The idea of an international day to celebrate yoga came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proposed it during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. He spoke about how yoga is “an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition” and how it brings harmony between man and nature.
The proposal gained strong support from 177 countries, making it one of the most widely supported resolutions in UN history. As a result, 21st June was officially declared as International Day of Yoga by the UN on 11th December 2014, and the first celebration took place in 2015.
Yoga helps improve flexibility, strength, breathing, and mental clarity. By celebrating this day, people are reminded to prioritise their physical and mental health.
Yoga is now practised in over 190 countries. Whether you're in India, the UK, Japan, or Brazil - yoga connects people from different cultures and walks of life.
Yoga has its roots in India. International Yoga Day helps the world recognise and appreciate the rich traditions and philosophies of Indian culture.
This day inspires people who’ve never tried yoga to give it a go. Many join public sessions, online classes, or community events to experience its benefits firsthand.
This year, 2025, the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, also plans several programmes, including the initiative - ‘Yoga Samavesh’.
In a fast-paced world full of stress, yoga offers a path to calmness and balance. Celebrating Yoga Day helps individuals reconnect with themselves and slow down.
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned yogi, take some time on 21st June 2025 to roll out your mat, breathe deeply, and reconnect with your inner self.
