Interior design is a huge part of our everyday life. We might not be professionals, but we all like to decorate our homes in a way that speaks about who we are and what we like.

Celebrities posting pictures of their homes and shooting videos with Architectural Digest make us yearn to own similar spaces. While those houses are decorated and styled by pros, we have got decor trends that will rule in 2023 and you can incorporate them with ease.

We spoke with Paulomi Sanghvi, an interior designer practising for seven years, and Cyrus Mody, Founder and Managing Partner of Viceroy Properties LLP. Sanghvi is the founder of the design firm “The Fusion Atelier” based out of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Sanghvi said that interior design will showcase diversity in textures, colours, and materials this year.

“Shades of blue, personality-packed rugs fit for maximalists, statement window treatments, and high-style marble slabs in kitchens are just a few of their picks that have stood the test of time and will continue,” expert from Viceroy Propertiesadded.

If you are in the mood to amplify the decor of your home, you do not have to go all out at once. You can start with the living room, a bedroom, a balcony or a kitchen. In 2023, creating a zen space – an amalgamation of maximalism with minimalism – would be the approach where people would experience maximum comfort and luxury with minimal investment.

Here are five trends that you must know about.

Earthy Tones & Rustic Colours

Colour has always been an expressive element in interior design. This year, earthy and rustic hues of browns, deep corals and mustard will be embraced to add cosiness, contrast and warmth into spaces.

They will create symmetry while facilitating that different rooms do not look identical. “Warm stains of wood with a gentle touch of brushed gold will win the selections over the other metal finishes this year. On the other hand, sophisticated pastel palette of greens and blues continue to stay in trend,” added Sanghvi.

Customised Personal Spaces

In 2023, the spaces will appear customised according to the person who owns them.

“Design details like inlays, ornate décor, hand-loomed rugs and thrift finds will be a luxury in its own natural and subtle ways,” said Sanghvi.

Consumers will move towards more personalised products that will offer them a sense of empowerment in owning a style. It will also allow the addition of a unique touch to the living space.

Old Is Always Gold

Old is gold, while merely a saying, it stands true in interior designing. Though trends have changed, you will notice people trying to blend old styles with modern ones.

This will include repurposing the space or incorporating old furniture with new accessories. It will spruce up the space and allow you to redecorate the existing room with less investment.

Sanghvi noted, “People will embrace naturally recycled vintage furniture with raw unfinished textures paired with statement rugs.” This year, rugs will no longer be just a part of accessories but will add an artistic touch to spaces.

Whether people read books or not, they sure amplify the outlook of the space. Therefore, bibliophilic design is another trend that will go viral in the field of interior design. “It will involve a completely new pallet of sustainable materials infused with the intelligence of nature,” added our expert.

Wherever you will see books or bookshelf, you will notice that the space will be decorated with natural and organic showpieces like clay pots, shells, bamboo pieces, corks, terracotta and bricks. They will add a natural touch to the room helping you feel closer to nature in the midst of a concrete jungle.

People are already stepping away from straight linear lines and have started to add arches in living spaces, corridors, etc. Sanghvi added, “They create a sense of timelessness and comfort.” Elements like round door frames, rounded furniture, crescent sofas and circular rugs will occupy the centre position of the interior design space.
