Incognito Mode clears local history and cookies, hiding activity from other device users. However, it offers no protection from external monitoring; your ISP, employer, and visited websites can still track your actions. It is a local session cleanup tool, not a means for achieving true anonymity.

What Is Incognito Mode?

Incognito Mode, better known as Private Browsing, is a functionality in most browsers that allows users to browse the internet without leaving traces of their activity on the device they use. Opening an incognito window means it will not save local browsing history, cookies, site data, and information entered into forms. It is mainly used for granting local privacy-that is, to keep other people using the same physical device from seeing your browsing activity. But it is important to note that Incognito Mode protects you in no way from external monitoring-your ISP, your employer if you're using a work network, and the websites you access may still track your activity.

What Incognito Mode Hides

Incognito Mode is fundamentally designed to limit the digital footprint you leave on your local device. When you close the Incognito window, the browser deletes the following data:

  • Browsing History: Websites you visited are not recorded in your browser history.

  • Cookies and Site Data: Temporary cookies and site-specific data are deleted when the window closes, preventing websites from tracking your activity across sessions.

  • Information Entered in Forms: Any information you enter into forms (like addresses or login details) is not saved to your device's auto-fill memory.

  • Permissions: Permissions granted to websites (like access to your microphone or location) are reset.

  • In essence, Incognito protects your privacy from others who use the same device.

What Incognito Mode Doesn’t Hide

Incognito Mode offers no protection against external entities that monitor network traffic or associate activity with your IP address. Your actions are still visible to:

  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP): Your ISP can still see every website you visit, regardless of whether you are in Incognito Mode.

  • Your Employer or School: If you are using a work or school network, the network administrator or IT department can monitor your browsing activity.

  • The Websites Themselves: The websites you visit still collect data about your visit, including your IP address, which operating system you use, and which pages you view.

  • Government Agencies: Law enforcement or intelligence agencies can still track your activity if legally authorised to do so.

  • Viruses and Malware: Incognito Mode does not protect your device from malicious software or keyloggers installed on your computer.

The Incognito Myth

Incognito Mode is not a tool for anonymity; it is a local session cleanup utility. It's an eraser for the history on your personal computer.

You need more powerful tools-emphasis on powerful, it is true digital anonymity, avoiding tracking by external entities; you would be thinking along the lines of a Virtual Private Network to mask your IP address, or specialised privacy browsers such as Tor.
