A video capturing a man aggressively confronting and harassing a woman for not speaking Marathi has gone viral, sparking a heated debate around language politics on social media. The clip, originally shared by the X handle @gharkekalesh, shows the man insisting that since the woman lives in Maharashtra, she must speak Marathi.
Man Confronts Woman Over Language Choice In Maharashtra
The viral video, posted by the popular X account @gharkekalesh, shows a tense encounter between a Marathi-speaking man and a Hindi-speaking woman. The footage captures the man angrily demanding that the woman speak Marathi, claiming that living in Maharashtra comes with the obligation of knowing the regional language.
Despite the aggressive tone, the woman stays calm. In the video, she clearly states that she has every right to speak the language she is comfortable with, regardless of where she lives. She says, “Nahi aata mujhe Marathi. Nahi bolungi. Aata hi nahi toh kaise bolungi” (I don’t know Marathi. I won’t speak it. If I don’t know it, how can I speak it?).

When the man questions how she resides in Maharashtra, she replies, “Meri marzi se rehti hoon. Mera khud ka ghar hai” (I live here by choice. I own my house). When further pressed about where she is from, she replies, “Mera gaon kahi ka bhi rahe” (My village can be anywhere). When the man demands again that she speak Marathi, she responds assertively, “Nahi karungi. Kya karloge?Main koi bhi bhasha se baat karun, meri zabaan meri marzi” (I won’t speak it. What will you do? I’ll speak any language I want, my tongue, my choice).

The video has triggered a flurry of opinions online, with users sharing strong opinions on the issue.
An X user, @shailivation, pointed out how frustration stemming from unemployment often turns into misguided aggression. “When people don’t have jobs, they tend to latch onto artificial identities like language and pride. That’s when they end up harassing random people in public. You won’t find working professionals wasting time on such things,” the user wrote.
Meanwhile, @shekhar_anubhav emphasised the need for mutual respect, saying, “Language is important, yes, but this kind of harassment is unacceptable. Both sides should have handled it more politely.”
Another user, @zwitterati101, weighed in with a legal perspective, saying, “There’s no law in India that forces anyone to speak a particular language. In fact, Article 351 actually encourages the promotion of Hindi to help create cultural unity across regions. This incident is just awkward and unnecessary.”
