Yet with the advent of technologically advanced materials like the polyester-cotton mix and mercerised nylon posing as real handloom sarees, buying a truly authentic one has become difficult. A simple touch test will not help any longer. For those looking for a truly authentic product, here are some steps to identify pure cotton sarees as well as fake ones and the reason behind their value.

How To Identify Pure Cotton Sarees

1. The Burn Test

Snip a microscopic thread from the loose end of the saree’s pallu using a pair of tweezers. Gently bring it to a small flame.

The Result: Pure cotton is a cellulose-based natural fibre. It will burn with a steady, clear flame and smell exactly like burning paper or autumn leaves. Once extinguished, it will leave behind a fine, soft grey ash that crumbles instantly when touched.

2. Check The Saree Label

Authentic, premium handloom cotton sarees in India are frequently certified by government-backed organisations. Look for the official Handloom Mark or Silk Mark tags. Additionally, check the washing instruction label; genuine cotton will state ‘100% Cotton’ and typically recommend a cold hand wash or dry clean, rather than artificial machine-wash parameters common to polyester.

3. Water Absorption Test

Place a tiny drop of water on the inner side of the saree fabric. On a pure cotton saree, the water drop will be absorbed instantly and spread outward into a damp circle. If the saree is synthetic or heavily blended, the water drop will bead up, sit on the surface of the fabric, or slide right off due to the moisture-repellent nature of polyester plastics.

4. Check If The Saree Wrinkles Easily

Take a handful of the saree fabric and bunch it up tightly in your fist, holding it compressed for roughly 10 to 15 seconds, then release it.

The Result: Pure cotton will instantly show sharp, distinct crease lines and wrinkles where your fingers pressed down. If the fabric springs back perfectly smooth and completely unbothered without a single wrinkle, it is mixed with synthetic fibres.

5. Check The Fabric’s Breathability

Hold the saree up against your mouth and try to blow air through a single layer of the fabric. With pure cotton, you will feel the warm air pass through to the other side effortlessly. If you feel a distinct resistance, or if the air bounces back against your face, the weave contains tightly packed plastic-based synthetic yarns.

Signs Of Fake Cotton Sarees

• A genuine cotton saree will not curl when it is burned; rather, it forms a melted, tough, black plastic-like bead that has a chemical fuel smell.

• True cotton will look very soft, dull, and matte in nature. If the saree sparkles or shows metallic glossiness when placed in bright sunlight, then polyester or nylon has been used in it.

• Initially, pure handloom cotton will be cool when touched, but immediately takes on your body temperature as soon as it comes into contact with your skin. Fake man-made fibres tend to be slick and unnatural to the touch.

• True cotton fabric will have the property of shrinking slightly in its very first wash due to the natural yarn adjusting itself. If the saree does not shrink at all but continues to retain its stiffness even after washing, it means it is a man-made fibre.
