If you're looking to add a bit of greenery to your home without the hassle, the Zamioculcas zamiifolia, better known as the ZZ plant is a great pick. Often called the ‘Zanzibar gem’ thanks to its African roots, this glossy, deep green plant is perfect for busy plant lovers or beginners.
Much like the ever-popular snake plant, the ZZ plant has become a go-to for anyone who wants indoor plants that don’t demand much. And the best part? You can even grow it in a bottle. Here’s a super simple guide to help you get started.
We got in touch with Swaminathan, a local gardener from Dwarka, who shared his easy and beginner-friendly guide to growing the hardy and stylish ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) in a bottle. Known for its shiny green leaves and minimal care needs, the ZZ plant is perfect for anyone who wants low-maintenance indoor greenery.

Choose a transparent glass bottle or jar with a neck wide enough to insert the plant. Clear containers allow you to monitor root growth and soil moisture.
Add 1–2 inches of small pebbles or gravel at the bottom. This helps excess water settle away from the roots.
A thin layer of activated charcoal over the pebbles will prevent mould and keep the soil smelling fresh.
Fill the bottle about halfway with a well-draining potting mix. A succulent mix works well since ZZ plants dislike soggy soil.
Gently insert the cutting or small ZZ plant into the soil. Use a stick or spoon to guide and position the roots, especially if the bottle has a narrow neck.
ZZ plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight but also tolerate low light. Avoid placing them in harsh direct sunlight.
Water lightly—just enough to moisten the soil. Since there's no drainage, it's important not to overwater. Wait until the topsoil feels dry before watering again.

Wipe the inside of the bottle every couple of weeks to prevent fogging and check for any fungal growth.
Swaminathan adds, “The ZZ plant is perfect for busy people. Once it’s set, it practically takes care of itself. Just don’t overwater it.”
