Spider plants are a popular choice for houseplants due to their easy care and air-purifying qualities. While they prefer bright, indirect sunlight, they are also adaptable and can survive in lower-light conditions. However, their growth may be slower, and their leaves might become more elongated as they reach for the available light. Here's a guide to growing a spider plant in low-light conditions.
Place the plant in a spot with filtered sunlight, such as a north-facing window or a darker corner of a room. Note that variegated spider plants may lose some of their colour and vibrancy in very low light. All-green varieties tend to perform better. If natural light is extremely limited, you can use a small grow light or an LED bulb to provide the necessary light spectrum for healthy growth.

In low-light environments, your spider plant's water needs will be different. The plant won't be transpiring as quickly, so you'll need to water less often to avoid root rot. Overwatering is a common mistake that can lead to yellow leaves and root rot. Ensure your pot has proper drainage holes to prevent the plant from sitting in water.

Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting soil. Choose a pot with a drainage hole. Porous materials like terracotta can help prevent waterlogging. Spider plants grow quickly and prefer to be slightly "pot-bound." Frequent repotting is needed to give them room to grow.

During the growing season, you can fertilise your plant every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce the frequency to once every 8-10 weeks in the fall and winter when growth slows.
Spider plants love humidity. You can increase the humidity around the plant by misting it with distilled water or by placing a humidifier in the same room.
Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust, which can hinder the plant's ability to absorb light and photosynthesise.
