In today’s fast-paced world, taking out time in the morning to flip the newspaper is a luxury. But it’s important to take a few minutes from this hectic lifestyle to unwind and relax. Whether you are a reading enthusiast or you are someone who is looking to have space where you can unwind and relax or indulge in activities you like, these inputs by Aashna Chaudhary, Partner and Design Head, EDC Space will help you build the same.
Figure Out The Size
The step to building a reading space is to figure out the size of the ideal bookshelf where you can display your book collection. For the smaller books, you can choose 8” to 10” of shelf height and a depth of 9” is ideal if you’ve got some coffee table books and encyclopaedias, make those shelves 12” in height and 12” deep. Remember to keep the shelves deeper towards the bottom as it will make your bookshelf appear less heavy in the room.
Light Up The Space
A reading corner doesn’t need to be elaborate. But it should be well-lit so that you can read your books properly, without putting too much strain on your eyes. Moreover, the reading corner near the window is the perfect spot as it will allow you to soak in some Vitamin D while you are engaged in reading.
Make The Space Functional
Comfort is important while you are engaged in reading. Thus, you can get a deep armchair, a large lamp hanging from a wall bracket or a tall floor lamp leaping over you for better light and a side table where you can place your coffee mug.

Add Personal Touch
Adding a personal touch to the space will make it look more appealing to you. You can add some frames (wall hanging plants), upholstery of your choice, an art frame that reflects your thoughts and a musical instrument. These elements will add to the aesthetic of the space and will look more inviting.
Use Odd Corners
If you don’t have space in your house for making a reading corner (home decor trends 2024) then you can vouch for the odd or underutilised spaces in your house like under the staircase. However, you will have to add enough lighting to make the space appear warm and facilitate your reading.
