Rakhi For Sisters: “We don’t have a brother, but you are always there to protect me and save me from mumma’s reprimand, and I save you food, so we’ll tie rakhi to each other every year,” said my sister Kavya. I do not remember the day, date, or year when she said it, but I remember that we have a whole new definition of Raksha Bandhan in our home.
When I was a child, not having a brother used to bother me, especially around Rakhi and Bhai Dooj. Since my father did not have a sister, I used to tie rakhi on his wrist or put vermillion on his head. But the feeling is never the same as one would feel when celebrating these festivals with a sibling.
Don’t get me wrong, I have many cousins, and I don’t believe in ‘blood is thicker than water’. It used to be a rare occurrence when I used to have cousins having fun around these festivals. These festivals used to be downright depressing for me.
Whether we see it in films (Films Celebrating Bonds Between Siblings) or TV serials, the significance of Rakhi revolves around the bond between brothers and sisters. From ‘Choti Bahen’ to ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, the scenes of Raksha Bandhan have always shown a sister tying rakhi to her brother.
What about people who do not have a sister or brother? What if you are a brother-brother or sister-sister duo at home? Do you not deserve to celebrate the festival? These are not the questions I am asking you, but these questions have always been in my head until my sister told me that we would tweak the traditions to suit our family dynamics.

I remember that she was small enough not to understand what the word tradition carries but big enough to rebel to turn the situation in her favour. Yes, there was a little motive behind it. She saw my father gifting his cousin with a present post rakhi rituals.
Her wicked mind had a motive that if she would tie a rakhi on my hand, I would present her with gifts too. Since I was too young to earn, my mother gave her money in an envelope on my behalf. The definition of Raksha Bandhan changed that day for me and my sister (Rakhi Gifts For Sisters).
Every year, we both buy Rakhis for each other and our cousins. When the clock shows the auspicious time, we tie it on each other’s wrists and promise to take care of each other and maintain a level of insanity in our relationship. She promises to always irritate me no matter what kind of a day I am having, and I promise to shower her with gifts.
For us, the ritual of tying the rakhi signifies the unique bond we share with each other. The thread symbolises the love, warmth, and affection we share. It has been more than two decades since our first Raksha Bandhan, and I cherish that moment like it happened yesterday.
