Banks in certain Indian states will be closed on November 15, 2024, on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s website. RBI publishes a list of regional and national holidays state-wise. Apart from the holidays, banks also remain closed on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays.
Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on November 15 this year. Also known as Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, it marks the birth of Guru Nanak, the revered founder and first guru of Sikhism. As the founder of Sikhism and one of its most prominent figures, Guru Nanak is deeply respected in the Sikh community.
According to Britannica, “Nanak is believed to have had a revelatory experience when he was about 30 years old. According to a Janamsakhi text, he disappeared while bathing in a river and was presumed drowned. The hagiographical accounts suggest that during his disappearance Nanak communed with the supreme being, who gave him the nectar of immortality (amrit) that granted him knowledge of the divine name. The mystical experience is thought to have afforded him with an epiphanic vision of transcendent reality.”
The celebration not only honours his birth but also serves as a reminder of his profound teachings. Guru Nanak Jayanti takes place annually on the full moon day of the month of Katak, usually falling in October or November due to variations in the lunar calendar.
