Guru Nanak Jayanti 2022: Date, History And Significance

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab is one of the most auspicious festivals of the Sikh community. It is celebrated worldwide on the day of Kartik Purnima as per the Hindu calendar to celebrate the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

This year will mark the 553rd Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak and it will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 8.

Purnima Timings

The Purnima tithi will begin at 4:15 PM on Nov 07, 2022, and it will end at 4:31 PM on Nov 08, 2022, according to Drik Pachang.

History

On April 15, 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, which is now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, near Lahore. He was born in 1469 on Puranmashi of Kattak (Kartik), as per the Bikrami calendar. Also, he was born on the full moon of the Indian lunar month of Kartik, according to Bhai Bala Janamsakhi. So, between October and November, Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak's Jayanti. The auspicious and divine day will be observed on November 8 this year.

Guru Nanak Ji is said to have been born at 1:20 am. Around this time, the congregation begins singing Gurbani.

Significance

This day serves as a reminder for his devotees to follow his teachings and overcome the five vices of lust, greed, attachment, anger, and pride. What made him stand out was the fact that his teachings stood in contrast with the religious practices of his time and became part of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs.

Two days before the festival, Akhand Path (48-hour non-stop reading of the holy book of the Sikhs, Guru Granth Sahib) is held at Gurdwaras. A day earlier, a procession of devotees, called Nagarkirtan, is organised. The procession is led by a palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib and followed by devotees singing prayers.
