Gangasagar has been considered a Mahatirtha and this saying is related to the belief that the virtuous results that one gets by repeatedly visiting other pilgrimage places, can be achieved by taking a bath in Gangasagar only once. Earlier it was difficult to reach Ganga Sagar because the water route was the main only means to reach it. However, nowadays it has become easily accessible for people to reach this place.
The ritual of bathing in Gangasagar and Mela is linked to Mythology. It is believed that Mother Ganga has originated from the locks of Lord Shiva. She followed Bhagiratha and reached Kapil Muni's ashram and finally merged into the ocean. The day this merger took place was Makar Sankranti. Also, it is believed that 60,000 cursed sons of King Sagar were liberated by the holy water of Mother Ganga.
