Why India Celebrates Engineers' Day On September 15

Born in Muddenahalli in present-day Karnataka in 1861, Sir M. Visvesvaraya became a pioneering civil engineer whose career extended far beyond designing structures. His work involved irrigation, water supply, flood management and public infrastructure.

He later served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, where he was associated with the initiatives aimed at industrial, educational and economic development. His contribution earned him a key reputation as one of the figures behind the transformation of the princely state of Mysore. His association with water engineering remains particularly significant.

He was involved with important irrigation and water-supply projects, including the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Karnataka. His engineering approach combined technical knowledge with an understanding of how infrastructure could improve agriculture, water availability and people's lives.
