The history of Engineers Day in India is intertwined with the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka, he was a distinguished civil engineer, statesman, and the 19th Diwan of Mysore. His work was pivotal in shaping modern India.
Visvesvaraya's contributions were monumental. He's credited with designing and patenting the system of automatic weir water floodgates, first installed at the Khadakvasla Dam near Pune. This innovation, which raised the storage capacity of reservoirs without causing damage, was later used in the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and the iconic Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mysuru. As the Chief Engineer of Mysore State, he was instrumental in building the KRS Dam, which created one of Asia's largest reservoirs at the time.

Honouring the Profession: It's a day to acknowledge the hard work, creativity, and dedication of engineers who tackle complex challenges and create practical solutions that improve our quality of life.
Inspiring the Next Generation: It encourages young minds to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by highlighting the impact of engineering on society.
Recognising Innovation: The day shines a spotlight on innovative projects and technological breakthroughs across various fields, from aerospace and software to civil and mechanical engineering.
The theme for Engineers Day in India, often set by the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), focuses on current and future engineering challenges.
