5 Easy Tips To Take Care Of A Bonsai Plant At Home

Owning a bonsai is like having a living piece of art in your living room. While these miniature trees have a reputation for being fussy, the secret to a thriving bonsai isn't complex botanical knowledge; it’s consistency. Here are five easy tips to keep your bonsai healthy and beautiful at home.

5 Easy Tips To Take Care Of A Bonsai Plant At Home

1. Master The ‘Finger Test’ For Watering

Overwatering is the number one killer of indoor bonsai. Instead of watering on a schedule, use the finger test: stick your finger about half an inch into the soil. If the soil feels slightly damp, leave it. If it feels dry, water it thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes. Never let the soil go bone-dry, as bonsai have very small root systems that can dehydrate quickly.

2. Prioritise Bright, Indirect Light

Most bonsai are outdoor trees at heart, so they crave light. If you’re keeping yours indoors, placement is everything. Place your tree within 2–3 feet of a south-facing window. Avoid placing it directly above a radiator or in the path of an air conditioner, as the dry air and temperature swings can cause leaf drop.

3. Humidity Is Your Best Friend

Indoor environments are often too dry for bonsai, especially tropical species like the Ficus. To mimic their natural habitat, you need to boost local humidity. Use a humidity tray, a shallow tray filled with pebbles and a little water. Place the pot on the pebbles. As the water evaporates, it creates a moist microclimate around the leaves.

4. Prune For Shape and Health

Pruning is what keeps a bonsai miniature and maintains its artistic tree-like look. Use sharp shears to snip away new growth that has exceeded the desired shape. Spring and summer are the best times for pruning, as this is when the tree has the most energy to heal.

5. Feed Regularly, But Lightly

Because bonsai grow in a very small amount of soil, they quickly exhaust the available nutrients. Use a balanced, water-soluble organic fertiliser. During the growing season (spring through early autumn), feed your tree once a month. Always apply fertiliser when the soil is already moist; applying it to dry soil can burn the sensitive roots.
