Dev Diwali, celebrated on Kartik Purnima, holds deep spiritual and astrological importance in Hindu tradition. This festival of lights signifies the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura, and lighting 365 lamps is believed to bring blessings for every day of the year. We spoke to Astrologer Punit Pandey, co-founder of AstroSage AI, who explained the profound reasons behind this tradition.
Dev Diwali 2024: Date, Time, and Significance
Dev Diwali, also known as the Diwali of the Gods, is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of Kartik month, known as Kartik Purnima. In 2024, Dev Diwali will be celebrated on November 15, with the Purnima Tithi beginning at 6:21 AM and ending at 3:00 AM on November 16.
Astrologically, Kartik Purnima is when the Sun enters Libra, its weakest or “debilitated” sign, reducing the Sun’s positive influence on the environment. “This period is associated with a general decline in positivity and purity, which deep daan—lighting of lamps—is believed to counteract,” shares Punit Pandey. Lighting lamps on this day is said to dispel negativity and welcome divine blessings, especially in sacred locations like the ghats of Varanasi. According to Hindu tradition, Dev Diwali is also the time when all gods descend to earth to pay homage to Lord Shiva.

Dev Diwali 2024: Why Should You Light 365 Diyas On This Auspicious Day?
A key tradition on Dev Diwali is lighting a diya with 365 wicks or 365 individual diyas. Astrologer Punit Pandey explains, “Lighting a diya with 365 wicks represents offering light for each day of the year, symbolising continuous blessings, prosperity, and protection.” This act of lighting 365 lamps, or wicks, is thought to create an aura of positivity that lasts throughout the year, inviting peace and harmony into one’s life.
The lighting of diyas also signifies dispelling darkness and negativity that may surround us, especially during the Sun’s debilitated phase in Libra. According to Mr Pandey, “The lamps create a spiritual shield, fostering mental strength and removing impurities from the environment.” This symbolism of each diya, representing one day of the year, enhances the spiritual benefits of deep daan, helping to maintain spiritual positivity and balance.
