Navratri is here, and so are the invites. Every society, club and colony has a Garba night lined up, and most of them come with a Dandiya night too. A lot of people use the two words for the same thing. They are not the same, though both are part of the nine-day celebration of Goddess Durga, and both come from Gujarat.

What Is Garba?

Garba is danced in a circle around a lit diya, an earthen pot with a diya inside, or an idol of the Goddess. The pot is called a garbo, and it is linked to the word "garbha", meaning womb. That is why Garba is seen as a celebration of life, of feminine energy and of the Goddess herself.

There are no sticks here. Dancers move in rounds with graceful hand movements and rhythmic claps, usually in a simple three-clap pattern. The steps are easy to pick up, so Garba is the best place for beginners to start. It is also usually danced earlier in the evening, around the time of aarti.

What Is Dandiya?

Dandiya, or Dandiya Raas, is danced with a pair of decorated sticks. Dancers stand in pairs or circles and strike their sticks against their partner's to the beat of the dhol. The dance is linked to the Raas Leela of Krishna and the gopis.

It is also connected to the story of Goddess Durga and her fight with Mahishasura, where the sticks stand for her swords. It is faster and louder, and it needs good timing. Miss a beat and someone's knuckles will let you know.

Main Difference Between Garba And Dandiya?

Garba is graceful and devotional, while Dandiya is playful and high-energy. Garba is danced with hands and feet, and Dandiya needs sticks. Garba is usually a circle around the Goddess, and Dandiya is more about pairs and partners. Many events start with Garba and move to Dandiya once the night gets going, which is why the two get mixed up.

What To Wear?

For both, the traditional pick is a chaniya choli for women, often with mirror work and bright colours, and a kediyu or kurta with dhoti or churidar for men. Oxidised jewellery works well with all of it. Since there is a lot of twirling, choose a lehenga that is not too heavy and a dupatta that stays in place. Comfortable footwear matters more than looks here, because a lot of people end up dancing barefoot. Keep a spare pair of shoes handy.

Conclusion

Learn the basic three-clap Garba step at home, and it will make you feel far more confident on the floor. For Dandiya, hold the sticks firmly but not too tight, and watch your partner's rhythm before joining in. Drink water in between, because these nights can go on for hours.

FAQ
What is the main difference between Garba and Dandiya?
Garba is danced before Aarti, in a circular motion around the Goddess with empty hands and lots of claps. Dandiya is danced after Aarti, with two colourful sticks and a partner.
Which is easier for beginners, Garba or Dandiya?
Garba is easier for beginners because it has simple steps, you can follow the circle, and you don't need sticks or a partner. Dandiya needs more coordination and timing with a partner.
Do we wear different outfits for Garba and Dandiya?
Not really. Both are danced in the same festive outfits like chaniya choli, kurta and kediyu. But for Garba you can wear heavier jewellery, while for Dandiya keep your jewellery light so your sticks don't get stuck.
