Choti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, is the second day of the five-day Diwali celebration that begins with Dhanteras. It is typically celebrated the day before Diwali and this year, it falls on October 30. This day holds significant mythological importance in Hindu tradition, and there are various rituals that should be observed.
One of the key rituals is the lighting of diyas (lamps). However, many people are unsure about how many diyas to light on Choti Diwali. To provide clarity, we consulted astrologer Jyotishacharya Radhakant Vats to know how many diyas to light and where to place them on this auspicious day.
The 14th day of the Kartik month is celebrated as Choti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi. According to mythology, this is the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura to save 16,100 women.
It is believed, as per Hindu scriptures, that lighting a lamp or diya is essential after sunset on Choti Diwali, particularly during the Pradosh period of Narak Chaturdashi. Multiple diyas should be lit on this day, including a special four-faced diya. This practice is accompanied by prayers to Yam Raj, Lord Krishna, and Goddess Laxmi. Additionally, observing a fast on this day is thought to eliminate sins and grant moksha (liberation) to the devotees.
According to astrologer Jyotishacharya Radhakant Vats, one must light 14 diyas or lamps on the auspicious day of Choti Diwali. But if due to unavailability you can’t light 14 diyas, try to atleast light five of them.
