Angela Lansbury: Murder, She Wrote-Beauty & The Beast Star Passes Away At 96

Angela Lansbury was one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema.

Angela Lansbury, the Irish-British-American actor and singer popular from Murder, She Wrote, Beauty and the Beast, died at her Los Angeles home on Tuesday, her family announced. She was 96.

"The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles... just five days shy of her 97th birthday," a statement quoted by Variety.

Further, it read, "In addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre, and David, she is survived by three grandchildren, Peter, Katherine, and Ian, plus five great grandchildren and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw. A private family ceremony will be held at a date to be determined."

Born in an upper middle-class family in Central London, Lansbury is the daughter of Irish actress Moyna Macgill and English politician Edgar Lansbury. The actor later moved to the United States for higher studies and debuted in Hollywood in 1942 by signing on to MGM studios. Her first film roles included Gaslight (1944), National Velvet (1944), and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), earning her two Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award. She received widespread critical acclaim for her role in The Manchurian Candidate (1962), which is touted to be her career’s best performance earning her a third Oscar nomination.

In a career spanning almost eight decades, Lansbury first obtained stardom for playing the lead in the Broadway musical Mame (1966), which also won her first Tony Award and established her as a gay icon. After shinning on stage, Lansbury moved on to television and won hearts worldwide with her performance in the American fiction series Murder, She Wrote. She was also loved all over the world with her contribution to animated films like Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991).

Her accolades include an Honorary Academy Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BAFTA, a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, five additional Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, an Olivier Award, and 18 Emmy nominations. Lansbury was also made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

Tributes and condolences from all over have been pouring in on social media following the actor’s demise, which marks the end of an era.

“Dame Angela Lansbury has fallen asleep and gone to the ‘theatre in the Sky.’ She epitomised grace and exhibited a gifted natural talent. One of the world’s greatest actors. I had the privilege of meeting her,” wrote character actor David Suchet.

NASA wrote, “Tale as old as time, True as it can be. In memory of Angela Lansbury, we offer this cosmic rose plucked by our Spitzer Space Telescope.”

Lansbury is survived by her three children- Anthony, Deirdre and David, three grandchildren- Peter, Katherine and Ian, five great grandchildren, and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury.
