While speaking to The Times Of India, director Sanjay Gupta opened up about Jazbaa. He said, “Jazbaa was a case of very bad marketing. I let my team down by not fighting hard enough with the ridiculous studio heads deciding on the campaign.”

Gupta is one of the filmmakers known to add authenticity to remakes. He has directed films like Zinda and Kaante. Today, we often see Hindi films being remakes of Tollywood or Hollywood, but he was someone who always added originality to his stories.

The interviewer asked if Jazbaa put any pressure on him because it wasn’t a commercial success, despite it being marketed as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback on the big screen.

Jazbaa was a case of very bad marketing,” Gupta said. He said Rai running on the poster wearing a leather jacket was not his film. His film was also not about Irrfan Khan posing and fighting in a leather jacket and sunglasses.

From his point of view, Jazbaa was about a desperate mother and that was what Gupta wanted to portray via posters as well. He said that it was the only reason why in some scenes he did not allow Rai to get any makeup or hair done. “She was there in the mud and dust, screaming, shouting and wanting her child,” he added.

He said that if marketing gimmicks did stick to his vision, it would have been a different story altogether. According to Gupta, the poster of Aish was more like she was trying to be a shadow of her former self, which was not the case.

“I feel somewhere, I have let her down. I let Irrfan down.”

Gupta explained that despite being the director he could not change the direction in which the Jazbaa ship was sailing. However, he told the marketing team that they were selling the wrong film. “You are making people see what it is not.”
