It is finally time to pack our bags and head back to Middle-earth, and this time, we are doing it with a staggering mix of legendary icons and fresh Hollywood talent. At CinemaCon 2026, director Andy Serkis officially pulled back the curtain on the full cast for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.

The announcement has sent shockwaves through the fandom, especially since it confirms the return of four massive characters from the original trilogies. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum – Full Cast List

Andy Serkis as Gollum/Sméagol

Not only is Andy Serkis sitting in the director’s chair for this outing, but he is also stepping back into the ‘Mo-Cap’ suit that changed cinema forever. Serkis will once again portray the tragic, ring-obsessed Sméagol. This marks his first time playing the character since his brief but memorable appearance in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Jamie Dornan as Strider/Aragorn

In perhaps the biggest casting shake-up, Jamie Dornan is officially joining the franchise as a younger version of Aragorn, also known as Strider. While rumours had suggested Leo Woodall might take over the mantle from Viggo Mortensen, Dornan has secured the role. He’ll be tasked with portraying the Ranger in his prime, years before he took his place as the King of Gondor.

Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey

It wouldn't feel like Middle-earth without him. Sir Ian McKellen is officially back as the wise, pipe-smoking wizard, Gandalf. His involvement is central to the plot, as it is Gandalf who sets the entire ‘hunt’ in motion to protect the Shire and the One Ring from the prying eyes of the Dark Lord.

Kate Winslet as Marigol

Academy Award winner Kate Winslet is making her Middle-earth debut as a new character named Marigol. While details about her role remain a closely guarded secret, she is confirmed to be a lead character. Her addition brings a massive amount of prestige to the production, and fans are already theorising about where she fits into the lore.

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

In a move that surprised many given the film’s timeline, Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins. Since the story takes place in the years leading up to The Fellowship of the Ring, we will likely see a younger, pre-quest Frodo living a peaceful life in the Shire, unaware of the darkness brewing beyond the borders.

Lee Pace as Thranduil

Bridging the gap between The Hobbit and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Lee Pace reprises his role as the Elvenking, Thranduil. As the ruler of Mirkwood, his presence makes perfect sense given Gollum’s history of being held captive by the Wood-elves before his eventual escape.

After his breakout success in ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘One Day’, Leo Woodall has joined the cast as a new character called Halvard. Though many fans initially thought he was playing Aragorn, his role as Halvard is expected to be a significant addition to the ‘Strider’ storyline as they navigate the perils of the wild.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Plot

The film focuses on a pivotal but largely unseen chapter from Tolkien’s appendices. Set after Bilbo’s birthday party but before Frodo leaves the Shire, the story follows Aragorn as he tracks Gollum across Middle-earth. Gandalf orders the mission to ensure that Gollum doesn't fall into the hands of Sauron's forces and reveal the location of the One Ring. It promises to be a grittier, more grounded look at the corruption of the Ring and the lengths the heroes went to stay one step ahead of the shadows.

While filming begins next month in New Zealand, fans will have to wait a little longer to see the finished product. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on December 17, 2027.
