Rumours are circulating online that Tobey Maguire will return in an exciting reprisal in ‘Spider-Man 4’. Scriptwriter Mattson Tomlin teased the comeback, which has generated social media buzz. Here's what we know so far.
Tobey Maguire's appearance in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has resurfaced hopes for his return to the role in a potential fourth installment, possibly helmed by Sam Raimi. Recent social media breakdowns indicate the project may be in the works. These are not merely fan whispers; ‘The Batman’ and ‘The Batman Part II’ co-writer Mattson Tomlin has openly stoked the rumours.
When a user on X (previously Twitter) asked about updates on writer Mattson Tomlin's effort to write a fourth installment of the franchise, the writer replied, "slow and steady wins the race." He also warned that there wouldn't be anything definitive to report for a long time (if ever) since the project involves multiple individuals and complicated "politics" which he has no control over. Of most importance, though, he said he hasn't received a 'no' yet and is keeping his fingers crossed.

For those who haven't followed the issue, the creator of ‘The Batman’ has already shown that he is very interested in writing a script for Maguire's return. Tomlin imagines a fourth film in which the actor's Spider-Man is balancing life as a husband and father.
Earlier in July 2025, this idea was discussed by Tomlin on his X account. When questioned regarding the possible storyline, he replied candidly by saying that his key interest would be to pen a ‘Spider-Man 4’ based on Peter Parker as a family man. "Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards, given the last 8 films," he added.

The first Sam Raimi-directed series was cancelled because of a creative divide after the third one. The development for a fourth film in May 2011 was dropped, and Andrew Garfield relaunched the character in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ instead.
Yet in April 2022, Sam Raimi revealed he would be keen to direct another ‘Spider-Man’ film. Actress Kirsten Dunst, who starred as Mary Jane Watson in the trilogy, is also keen to go back and play out a scenario where the famous couple become parents in the fourth film.
