Resident Evil Early Reviews: This Survival Horror Series Called 'Pure Adrenaline', Austin Abrams' Acting Praised

Resident Evil is one of the most popular survival horror thriller franchises in Hollywood and just got a new reboot. It seems like it might be the best Resident Evil film in the series and has been receiving favourable reviews. The plot is set during events paralleling the game Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil has mostly received favourable reviews from the critics at early screenings. One critic hailed the fight sequences and how the film kept the intensity. Another called it a blend of horrid surprises and ground humour, while also being pure adrenaline.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is filled with horrid surprises and grounded dissociative humor. I really enjoyed it. The first two thirds is masterfully shot and perfectly edited survival horror. The final third is madcap Cabin in the Woods fun.

Who is in the cast of Resident Evil?

Austin Abrams plays Bryan, the protagonist of the story. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser feature in supporting roles.

Directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, Resident Evil is the second reboot and eighth film overall in the Resident Evil film series.

What is the story of Resident Evil?  

Resident Evil follows Bryan, a medical courier who must fight through a viral outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City during a delivery.

After the critical and commercial failure of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, Constantin Film began planning another Resident Evil reboot in early 2022. Several setbacks happened after the cancellation of the 2022 Netflix television series.

Zach Cregger, known for Weapons and Barbarian, was roped in to direct the film.

While talking about how the concept of Resident Evil came alive, the filmmaker told Deadline, "I’d had the concept for the movie. So I had lunch with Constantine, and I was like, “Here’s what I would do. I would like to just bring this to survival horror. I’d like to make a movie that feels like it feels when you play a Resident Evil game. So, gritty, horror-first, medical courier."

He added, "I kind of mapped out the whole story. It took 30 seconds — it’s a very simple story — and they dug it. They were down, and so I was able to go start writing where I had the beginning and the middle and the end in my head already.

Resident Evil has not just been a popular video game series but also a hit film franchise. However, the performance of the last few film in the franchise put entire thing in jeopardy. It looks like the Resident Evil series is here to thrive with the good response for the latest film.
