Raja Shivaji: Who Was Saibai Bhonsle?

There’s something quietly radical about ‘Raja Shivaji’ choosing to look beyond the battlefield. Yes, the film promises grandeur, legacy, and the larger-than-life journey of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but what stands out is its effort to acknowledge the people who stood beside him, often in the shadows.

One such figure is Saibai Bhonsle, brought to life by Genelia Deshmukh. And if history has often reduced her to a footnote, this film seems intent on correcting that.

Who Was Saibai Bhonsle?

Saibai Bhonsle was not just Shivaji’s first wife; she was, by most accounts, his closest confidante. Born into the influential Nimbalkar family, she was the daughter of Mudhojirao Naik Nimbalkar and Reubai, and part of a lineage that ruled over Phaltan.

Royal by birth, she was raised with both grace and grit. Historical accounts often describe her as someone who possessed not just beauty, but the discipline and temperament expected of a warrior household.

Saibai and Shivaji's Marriage: A Partnership, Not Just a Marriage

Saibai married Shivaji at a very young age, reportedly around ten. It was a union shaped as much by political foresight as by personal compatibility. Shivaji’s mother, Jijabai, is believed to have wanted a daughter-in-law who could manage the court and stand firm in turbulent times.

She wasn’t just a queen in name. She was a steady presence during Shivaji’s pursuit of Swarajya, offering counsel and emotional support. In many ways, she functioned as his sounding board, a role rarely acknowledged in mainstream retellings of history.

Interestingly, Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Raje Bhonsale, did not attend their wedding. Living in Bangalore with his second wife, Tukabai, at the time, he missed the ceremony, as did Shivaji’s brothers.

Yet, what the wedding lacked in attendance, it made up for in significance. Shahaji later hosted a grand celebration, formally recognising the union.

Saibai and Shivaji went on to have four children, Sambhaji, Ambikabai, Ranubai, and Sakavarbai, continuing a lineage that would shape Maratha history.

Saibai’s Role in Governance

History often remembers kings for their conquests, but rarely the women who kept the kingdom intact in their absence.

Saibai stepped into that role when Shivaji was held by the Mughals at Panhala. Under the guidance of Jijabai, she helped manage the affairs of the kingdom. It’s a reminder that leadership isn’t always about the battlefield; it’s also about endurance, stability, and trust.

Saibai’s Death

Saibai’s life was tragically short. She died at just 26, reportedly due to complications after childbirth, at Rajgad Fort in 1659. Her son, Sambhaji Maharaj, was barely two and a half years old at the time. He grew up without the warmth of a mother, a loss that adds another layer of poignancy to her story.

After her death, Soyrabai took over royal responsibilities. But by most historical accounts, she could never replace the emotional void Saibai left behind. There’s a detail often repeated in folklore: Shivaji’s last word was ‘Sai’.

Saibai remains one of the most respected queens in Maratha history, yet her story hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. Popular culture has touched upon her life in fragments, especially on Marathi television, but rarely has she been given the scale of a big-screen portrayal.
