Dominating the Oscars 2023 and making history all the way up was the 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film, hailed as a breakthrough for Hollywood diversity for its largely Asian cast, swept at the 95th edition of the Academy Awards with seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Lead Actress, and Best Supporting Actors (both male and female), among others.
Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, who co-produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo, the surreal superhero comedy film stars Michelle Yeoh in the lead along with Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis in pivotal roles.

When I first saw the film after my best friend’s suggestion, little did I know that a subtitled conversation between two rocks could be so emotional, that this film would not only end up winning my heart but seven Oscars. The film consists of, a multiverse of martial arts, hot dog fingers, a bagel, references to Ratatouille, and an honest connection with your mother, revolves around immigrant parents who run a laundromat getting audited by the IRS.

When Everything Everywhere All At Once hit the theatres it wasn’t as big a film as its title, its nominations, competitors and the awards it ended up winning. It is a film made with a modest budget that began slow and with a limited roll out. What made it go and become massive was word of mouth, suggestions by friends, and sticking to the theatre for a moderate amount of time rather than releasing on OTT platforms. The film went from a budget of $15 million to earning over $100 million. It competed with films like Top Gun Maverick, Avatar: Way Of Water, and The Fabelmans, among others that did big at the box office.

Histories Everything Everywhere All At Once Made On Its Way To Best Picture
For a long time, the Oscars has been called out for favouring historical epics and prestige dramas that appealed to a majorly white American audience. Since the last few years, the Oscars have been trying really hard to be inclusive.
This year Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win an Oscar under the Best Actress category. The film also makes for SXSW’s first world premiere to win an Oscars Best Picture award.
