Live-action versions of animated classics and beloved video games are some of the most highly anticipated films (or series) each year, largely due to the widespread appeal of their original forms. The upcoming remake centres on a young Hawaiian orphan named Lilo who forms a bond with Stitch, a koala-like alien that crash-lands on the island. Maia Kealoha stars as Lilo, with Chris Sanders, the creator of ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ voicing Stitch. The cast also includes Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, and Zach Galifianakis, among others. The film is set to release on May 23, 2025.
The German fairy tale, first published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812 and revised in 1854, has been adapted into numerous live-action films and one animated film before Walt Disney's iconic ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 1937. Since then, no other adaptation, in any format, has garnered as much popularity.
The upcoming ‘Snow White’ is a fresh live-action take on the 1937 animation. Starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, the film also features Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan. With Greta Gerwig co-writing the screenplay alongside Erin Cressida Wilson, much anticipation surrounds the film. This marks Gerwig’s first project since ‘Barbie’ (2023), for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The live-action adaptation is slated for release on March 21, 2025.

One of the most highly anticipated live-action films of 2025, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ seeks to replicate the incredible success of the animated franchise that began in 2010. The film stars Mason Thames and Nico Parker as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and Astrid Hofferson, the central characters in the story. Other notable cast members include action star Gerard Butler and English comedian Nick Frost. Butler returns to voice Stoick the Vast, a role he originated in the animated films, making him the only actor reprising their voice role.

The live-action adaptation is directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed all three ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ animated movies and received Academy Award nominations for each. According to Universal Pictures, the live-action film will likely follow a similar storyline to the first animated film, focusing on the developing friendship between Hiccup and the Night Fury dragon, Toothless.

Not only is ‘A Minecraft Movie’ one of the most highly anticipated Warner Bros. films of 2025, but it's also one of the most eagerly awaited live-action video game adaptations of all time. The film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, among others. It follows a group of people from the real world who are mysteriously transported to a magical realm known as the Overworld, a world made up of cube-shaped structures. This live-action adaptation of the popular video game is set to be released on April 4, 2025.
