Avatar: The Way of Water, the second instalment of the popular Hollywood sci-fi franchise Avatar, released in theatres on December 6, 2022. Within a month, the James Cameron directorial has become the seventh highest-grossing film in the history of cinema.
Set 13 years after the events of the first instalment, the sequel returns with the story of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña ) family amidst the emergence of a new danger that they have to face. The film is about the lengths they will go to and the battles they will fight to stay alive and the tragedies they have to endure.

Following films like Avengers: Endgame, Jurassic World, Avengers: Infinity War, Avatar, and Spiderman: No Way Home that surpassed the $2 billion mark, Avatar: The Way of Water has collected $517 million in North America and $1.19 billion overseas.

The film has also become the second highest-grossing film in the pandemic era following 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and will soon enter the $2 billion club if it keeps earning at this rate.
The film released more than a decade after the first instalment of the epic science fiction film, Avatar, which was released in 2009. Set in the mid-22nd century when humans are set to colonise Pandora, Avatar followed the story of a local tribe of the Na'vi people, a humanoid species indigenous fighting against the same. Pandora is a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system and humans intend to expand the mining colony in order to mine the valuable mineral unobtainium .

Following the release of the sequel Avatar: The Way of Water this December, the third instalment is scheduled to release On December 20, 2024 and the subsequent sequels are aiming for December 2026 and December 2028.
