The chances of a Bollywood period drama movie not courting controversy before its release is once in a blue moon. In the past, many movies like ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Jodha Akbar’, and more have invited disputes for various sentimental and religious reasons. No matter the popularity of period dramas among the audience, delicate matters like inaccuracies or perceived distortions can spark legal battles, public outrage, and even violence which urges filmmakers to tread carefully.
Below are some best examples of Bollywood period dramas that got spiralled into controversy before release:
The most recent period drama to spark controversy is Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava. The makers released the trailer of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s biopic a few days ago. While the trailer received a great response, some social media users and politicians were not happy with the scene where Sambhaji Maharaj dances with Yesubai Bhonsale. There were objections raised on the scene and before any major protests took place, the makers decided to remove it.
When we think about period films and controversies, the first movie that comes to mind is Padmaavat. There was a lot of drama surrounding the film, starting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali being slapped on the set. Then, there were threats that Deepika Padukone would be beheaded because the Karni Sena group believed that the film showed a romantic scene between Khilji and Rani Padmavati.

The makers of Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi also found themselves surrounded by controversy. Karni Sena had objections fueled by the assumptions that Rani Lakshmi Bai might be shown having an affair with a British officer. Later, Kangana Ranaut gave it back to them in a statement that read, “Four historians have certified Manikarnika, we have got censor certificate as well, Karni Sena has conveyed this but they are continuing to harass me. If they don't stop then they should know I am also a Rajput and I will destroy each one of them.”
