‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ at its core has all the heart and soul that a Dharma movie is made of. Of course it has all the grandiose as is expected from a larger than life Dharma Productions movie but it also takes us through a rather complex love story that unravels between two polar opposite cultures. To add more tadka to the already typical situation, the good old Indian families take on the role of driving the car of relationships from the backseat.

The captain of the Dharma ship takes the director’s seat after a hiatus of seven long years, but boy how well has he expressed his love for masala style Bollywood cinema in all its grandeur. Johar revisits a bunch of his iconic scenes in this movie, but this time in all the right ways. It is almost as though Johar is saying to the audience, “Get the same old Dharma style grandeur wrapped in a new gift package.”

‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ is the first of its kind Dharma movie that questions patriarchy, misogyny, cultural biases and conditioning as well as body shaming.

Here are five times that the newest Dharma Productions flick questioned the norm of society and made the movie goers question whether the ‘Bhartiya sanskriti’ has been doing all things right, or maybe not?

Feminism Finds Voice

Karan gives us strong and independent female characters in Alia Bhatt who essays a modern day journalist, Shabana Azmi who is Alia’s ahead of her times grandmother, Churni Ganguly who plays Alia’s well read and bred mother. They are all strong women in their own right. In this context, we say that even Jaya Bachchan’s character ‘Dhanlaxmi’ is a strong pillar of a woman who forays her family into a successful business clan.

Racism Is Highlighted

The question of race is brought forth in the movie when Ranveer Singh’s character, ‘Rocky Randhawa’ utters amid conversation to Alia’s onscreen mother that “chai peene se kaale ho jaate hain” which literally means that one grows dark because of consuming tea. In response he gets a befitting answer from Churni Ganguly’s character. Ranveer is left dumbstruck and expresses his love for #blacklivesmatter, Drake and Kanye West.

Body Shaming Is Given Center Stage

Ranveer’s sister’s character, ‘Gayatri’ is fat shamed left right and center by the society and her kin alike. What’s more is she was renamed ‘Golu’ by her familia and only befitted okay to be a marriage material bride ignoring her agency and talents altogether. This was the fate of the character ‘Punam Randhawa’, ‘Rocky’s mother’ played by  Kshitee Jog.

Women Become Agents Of Patriarchy

Jaya Bachchan’s character ‘Dhanlaxmi Randhawa’ is the epitome of patriarchy and shows us just how the construct trickles down generations across societies and how women themselves become agents of this God forsaken societal norm.

Cultural Conditioning And Cancel Culture

The saga of opposite worlds meeting and getting attracted is an overdone theme featured in Bollywood love sagas. But, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ essentially questions the socially practiced norms of people coming from different regions being worlds apart. Add to this the focus on not accepting alien cultures and adopting cancel culture when it comes to families being accepting of your child’s significant other.
