Indian sports have been deeply saddened by the death of great marksman and coach Jaspal Rana, who breathed his last on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 49 years, in a New Delhi hospital. Suffering from serious health issues, Rana had undergone a cardiac operation immediately after his return from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany, from where he had returned as the high-performance pistol coach of the Indian team. Jaspal Rana is known around the world as being one of the main pillars of modern-day Indian shooting, and initially established himself as one of the greatest athletes of India when he won 15 medals, out of which he managed to win many gold medals, during the Commonwealth Games as well as various Asian Games. He is a Padma Shri, Arjuna, and Dronacharya award winner. After retiring from competitive sport, Jaspal Rana became a coach and coached the young but brilliant Manu Bhaker to victory in the 2024 Olympic Games.

Jaspal Rana was an outstanding Indian shooter, sport administrator, and high-performance coach and was regarded as one of the greatest icons in the Indian sport fraternity. He was born on 28th June 1976 in the beautiful valleys of Uttarakhand. Rana is recognised for taking the Indian sport shooting fraternity to the global stage during a time when India was still struggling with the establishment of its sporting identity at the international level. A master of the 25-meter Centre Fire Pistol and Standard Pistol events, Rana rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s with his exceptional shooting skills and intense concentration levels. After an illustrious playing career, Rana went on to become a successful coach, spending his life shaping the sport in India. An irreplaceable loss was felt by the sporting community across the world following the tragic demise of Jaspal Rana in the year 2026, on 12th June, at the age of 49, in New Delhi, after suffering a heart attack while returning from the ISSF World Cup held in Germany.

Jaspal Rana's professional career is a glittering tapestry of historic milestones and record-breaking triumphs. He burst onto the international scene in 1994 by winning a gold medal at the 46th World Shooting Championship (Junior Section) in Milan, Italy, with a world-record score. That same year, he clinched a historic gold at the Hiroshima Asian Games. Rana permanently cemented his status as a sporting legend at the Commonwealth Games, becoming India's most successful athlete in the competition's history by amassing an astonishing 15 medals, including 9 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze across four consecutive editions from 1994 to 2006. His finest individual competitive moment arrived at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, where he captured three gold medals and equalled the world record in the 25-meter Centre Fire Pistol event with a flawless 590 points. For his immense contributions, the Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1994 and the Padma Shri in 1997. After retiring from active competition, Rana took up coaching in 2012 and was eventually honoured with the Dronacharya Award in 2020. Jaspal Rana Family Background
Jaspal Rana belonged to a patriotic and athletic family of Garhwali origin based out of Uttarakhand. His father, Narayan Singh Rana, is a respected 1971 war hero of India who rendered outstanding services in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and then ventured into politics to serve as the first sports minister of Uttarakhand in 2000. It is because of the strong liking for shooting events demonstrated by his father that Jaspal received his first coaching on the shooting platform. The legacy of athletics continued in the family as both of his brothers, Subhash Rana and Sushma Singh (Rana), turned out to be very successful shooters for the nation. This sporting background of his family played a crucial part in moulding his competitive nature.

Jaspal Rana received his early education in the context of his family and managed to combine his studies with dedication towards intensive practice on a daily basis. Having aspired to receive higher education along with participating in international tournaments on behalf of his country, he joined the renowned University of Delhi. Having graduated from the institution, Rana successfully managed his studies amid intensive travelling and competitions. The significance that Rana attaches to education and physical activity resulted in his creation of the Jaspal Rana Institute of Education and Technology in the city of Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand.
