Herstory is the place where we acknowledge all those women who have accomplished many things and broken many barriers to make a positive difference in the world.
Nigar Shaji is an Indian engineer in aerospace who holds the position of a senior space scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). She became famous in the international arena as the Project Director for the Aditya-L1 project, which was India’s first-ever space-based mission meant to conduct research on the Sun.
Having worked at ISRO for more than three decades now, Nigar Shaji has played a crucial role in contributing to the scientific advancements in satellite communication, remote sensing, and interplanetary studies in India.
Who Is Nigar Shaji?
Nigar Shaji was born in a family of farmers in Sengottai, Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. She did her undergraduate studies in Electronics and Communication Engineering in Tirunelveli. She later went on to do her postgraduate studies in Electronics from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. In 1987, she joined ISRO’s U R Rao Satellite Centre and has been rising through the ranks as a test engineer for satellites since then.
Nigar Shaji Role As Project Director Of Aditya-L1
Nigar Shaji was the Project Director who managed the execution of the complicated scientific and engineering process involved in the development of Aditya-L1. She successfully led the launch of the satellite in September 2023 and placed it in a halo orbit at the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrangian point to study space weather and phenomena occurring within.
Nigar Shaji Contributions To ISRO
Before heading up Aditya-L1, Shaji was the Associate Project Director for Resourcesat-2A, an important remote-sensing satellite for India. Her knowledge is not limited to space missions within Earth’s orbit; she has also worked as a study director for the proposed mission to Venus and other planets.
Conclusion
From Nigar Shaji’s transition from the small town of Tamil Nadu to the directorship of one of ISRO’s most sophisticated missions, it is evident how technically skilled and visionary she is. As the mind behind India’s Aditya-L1 mission, she is an inspiration for many women in STEM.
