Durga Puja has plenty of big moments, but only one of them is said to be the most powerful of all. It happens in a short window when Ashtami ends and Navami begins. That window is Sandhi Puja, and in 2026 it falls on a Monday morning.

What Is Sandhi Puja?

The word sandhi simply means a junction or meeting point. Sandhi Puja is done at the exact time when the Ashtami tithi hands over to the Navami tithi. It covers the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami, so the whole puja runs for about 48 minutes.

Many devotees consider this the high point of Durga Puja. Pandals across the country, especially in Bengal, see their biggest crowds at this hour.

Why Is It Considered So Special?

The tory goes back to the battle between Goddess Durga and the demons. When the demons Chanda and Munda attacked, the goddess grew furious and took the fierce form of Goddess Chamunda. She is believed to have defeated both of them at this very junction of Ashtami and Navami.

So the puja is offered to Durga in her Chamunda avatar. It is less about celebration and more about strength, courage and the end of evil.

Sandhi Puja 2026 Date And Time

This year, Ashtami and Navami fall on the same day, so Sandhi Puja is on Monday, 19 October 2026. As per Drik Panchang, the Ashtami tithi ends at around 10:51 AM IST. That puts the Sandhi Puja window at roughly 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM.

Timings can shift by a few minutes from city to city, and some panchangs differ slightly. It's best to check the exact time with your local pandal or panchang before you plan.

Rituals Of Sandhi Puja

The most well-known ritual is the lighting of 108 earthen lamps. These are lit and kept burning through the 48 minutes, and the lamps are usually placed in front of the idol.

Along with the lamps, 108 lotus flowers are offered to the goddess. If lotuses aren't easy to find, many families and pandals use other flowers, but the number 108 stays. Red hibiscus, fruits, grains and sweets are also part of the offering.

Devotees chant mantras while the beat of the dhak, the sound of conch shells and the smoke of dhunuchi fill the pandal. The mood is intense and loud, and very different from the calm of a regular aarti.

Traditionally, an animal sacrifice was part of the ritual. Today, most places have replaced it with a symbolic offering of a banana, pumpkin or sugarcane. Even Belur Math in West Bengal follows the banana custom.

Can You Do Sandhi Puja At Home?

Yes, many families keep it simple. You can light 108 diyas, or fewer if that's easier, offer flowers and fruits to Maa Durga, and chant the Durga mantras you know. What matters most is doing it within the Sandhi window.

Once it ends, Maha Navami celebrations take over and the festival moves towards Vijaya Dashami.

Conclusion

Sandhi Puja is a short window, but it carries the whole spirit of Durga Puja. It marks the moment when the goddess is believed to have taken her fiercest form and ended the fight against evil. This year, it falls on Monday, 19 October, around 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM, so keep the time in mind if you plan to visit a pandal or pray at home.

You don't need a grand setup for it. A few diyas, some flowers and a sincere prayer in those 48 minutes are enough. Once it's over, Maha Navami begins and the festival moves closer to Vijaya Dashami.
