Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraadh Paksha is a 15 day period in the Hindu calendar. During this period Hindus honour their ancestors by offering them food, prayers, Tarpan and shraadh rituals. This period begins after the Bhaadra Purnima on September 26, 2026. According to Drik Panchang, this period lasts 15 days and ends on Amawasya. 

When Is Pitru Paksha In 2026?

In the year 2026 Pitru Paksha is starting on 27th September, 2026 and the last day, which is known as the Sarva Pitru is on 10th October 2026. During these 15 days, you can perform shraadh on the lunar date associated with the ancestor’s death. The main ritual period includes Kutup Muhurat, Rohina Muhurat and Aparahna Kaal. 

What Is The Significance of Pitru Paksha?

Pitru Paksha offers a dedicated period for the living to remember their ancestors. Hindu traditions connect Shraadh with devotion and respect towards the ones who have left us. According to traditions, on the last of the Pitru Paksha, known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya on 10th October 2026, one can perform collective shraadh for the known and the unknown dead, for the ones whose death dates are not known. 

Auspicious Timings for Shraadh In Pitru Paksha

Shradh rituals should never be performed in the early morning; instead, use these afternoon segments:

  • Kutup Muhurat: 11:44 AM – 12:32 PM (Most preferred for starting the rites)
  • Rohina Muhurat: 12:32 PM – 1:20 PM (Second most auspicious window)
  • Aparahna Kaal: 1:20 PM – 3:45 PM (Extended afternoon period for completion and Tarpan)

Things To Not Do In Pitru Paksha 2026?

1. Avoid any new beginnings during this period.

2. Refrain from Rajasic and Tamasic Food

3. Don’t cut hair or nails.

4. Refrains from lavish festivities.

5. Don’t waste food 

Customs, and practices differ from family to family in India, in regard to Shraadh. You should follow guidelines given by your family priest. The most important thing to make sure is remember the correct timings and date. Another important feature about Pitru Paksha is that it is not an ordinary period, therefore you should not treat it as one.
