Ahoi Ashtami, which is performed by mothers to ensure the well-being and long life of their offspring, involves the performance of an intimate and intergenerational ceremony known as the Syahu Ki Mala, or the Ahoi Mala. The necklace, traditionally hung on a holy red thread called kalava, is highly meaningful in terms of its emotional and spiritual significance. In this jewellery, there is a silver pendant in the form of Ahoi Mata along with the maternal Syahu porcupine, which is mentioned in the vrata katha, surrounded by silver beads (moti or chandi ke dane). Every year or after the milestone of a baby’s birth, one or two new silver beads are traditionally tied to the thread. Here are five silver designs of Ahoi Mala.

Ahoi Ashtami Silver Pendant Designs: 5 Syahu Mala And Lockets

1. Traditional Embossed Ahoi Mata Silver Locket

The design is an oval or rectangular shape made from 925 sterling silver plate with an engraved depiction of the sacred symbolism of Ahoi Mata along with children, stars, and the moon. It is bordered by fine filigree beadwork and silver wire. For the evening puja, mothers wash this pendant with clean water and milk and put on roli before wearing it till Diwali.

2. Sculpted Syahu-Bachhde Animal Motif Pendant

This design takes direct inspiration from the central Katha, where the mother unknowingly causes injury to the baby porcupine and tries to atone for her sins through prayers. This pendant has an image of the mother Syahu and her children (bachhde) cast in silver. The back of the pendant is flat so that it can sit comfortably on the chest.

3. Ribbed Silver Beads (Chandi Ke Fluted Dane)

These beaded ornaments surrounding the pendant belong to the garland. These beaded ornaments are known as chandi ke dane. They are made up of very fine fluted or melon-cut lines that reflect light from the oil lamps used during the puja ceremony. The mothers add two more silver beaded ornaments to each end of the Syahu pendant every year.

4. Minimalist Hallmarked Silver Coin Pendant

For those ladies who would love to wear a neat and modern style even after the festival and on a silver chain, circular medallions are recommended. The coins are engraved with the image of Ahoi Mata on one side and a symbol of good fortune such as Swastika or Om on the other side.

5. Antique Matte-Finish Oxidised Syahu Mala Set

This variation of the heritage collection incorporates oxidised silver to emphasise the delicate carvings. The dark charcoal-like effect of the metal in the grooves draws attention to the expressions on the face of Ahoi Mata and the rough fur of the Syahu. Combined with the plain silver round beads and the bold red tassels made of silk, this combination creates an authentic look.
