Karwa Chauth is an auspicious occasion, but fasting while working a 9-5 job can be a challenge to some. Dr. Rohini Patil, nutritionist and founder of Nutracy Lifestyle, explains how you can manage meetings, deadlines, daily commuting to and fro and manage responsibilities without feeling drained and exhausted. She advises working Karwa Chauth fast observers to make meticulous plans to help them celebrate the festival while prioritising their health.

Pre-Fast Preparation: Fueling Your Body and Mind for the Day Ahead

Your pre-dawn meal, also known as 'Sargi', should be balanced and nutrient dense and must include slow-digesting carbohydrates like oats, protein and calcium sources like paneer, milk and curd, healthy fats present in nuts like almonds and walnuts and hydrating foods like cucumber and a variety of fruits which keep your fluid levels up, leaving you fresh and energetic. These foods support satiety and provide energy. Avoid making the meal excessively salty, sugary, or heavily fried. Drink adequate water before the fast begins if permitted.

Things To Do Before Pre-Dawn Meal?

Waking early for Sargi (pre-dawn meal) can shorten your sleep. Try to go to bed earlier the night before and avoid staying up late. Try to avoid any screen for 2 to 3 hours before your bedtime. During work, use short breathing exercises and meditation chants or quiet breaks to manage stress. Gentle movement is preferable to an intense workout when you have limited food or fluid intake. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel faint, confused, or unusually weak.

Navigating Your 9-5: Practical Tips for Fasting at the Office

Plan your schedule in advance. Complete demanding tasks when your energy is likely to be better, organise meetings, and avoid unnecessary overtime. Keep your workspace cool and take brief rest breaks between tasks. A practical and realistic schedule can make the day less stressful for you.

Maintaining Energy and Focus: Hydration, Rest, and Mindful Practices

If you are fasting without food or water, you may experience fatigue, headache, dizziness, or difficulty concentrating. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, and rushing anywhere. Move slowly when standing up, and take a break if you feel unwell or low on energy.

How to Observe Karwa Chauth Post-Work

When your fast ends, rehydrate gradually and eat a balanced meal rather than overeating immediately. Include protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, and healthy fats. For example, dal, roti, cooked vegetables, raw salad and curd can make a satisfying and nutritious meal. Eat slowly, and be mindful of your portion size. Limit very large portions, fried foods, and sweets if they make you feel uncomfortable. Continue drinking fluids according to your needs and medical advice.

Prioritising Your Body During the Fast

Fasting without adequate water intake can cause dehydration and may not be appropriate for everyone. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding and have any comorbidities should consult a healthcare professional before fasting. If you develop severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, or persistent weakness, stop the fast and seek medical help promptly.

Celebrate Karwa Chauth With Care

Karwa Chauth can be a valued cultural tradition, but your health matters too. Plan ahead, listen to your body, and make informed choices that are tailor-made to your lifestyle. A thoughtful approach can help you manage work responsibilities while celebrating Karwa Chauth with greater comfort, safety, and confidence.
