If protein has become a hero for a good diet, then fibre is not behind it. While scrolling through social media, you might have heard the term 'fibremaxxing' and wonder what this new trend is. The good news is, it is not some fad diet but a way of increasing fibre intake in your diet.

What is Fibremaxxing?

Fibremaxxing is a new social media trend but for nutrition, encouraging people to significantly increase their daily intake of dietary fiber. As adults generally need 25 to 38 grams of fiber per day, many people consume way less than that.
Unlike crash diets, fibermaxing does not ask you to cut carbs or buy expensive powders. It asks you to add more fibre-rich foods to what you are already eating.
There are two types of fibre you are taking in to achieve the goal:

1. Soluble Fibre:

This dissolves in water, feeds good gut bacteria, and controls blood sugar and cholesterol. Soluble fibre is usually found in oats, dal, fruits, and isabgol.

2. Insoluble Fibre:

This is beneficial for preventing constipation and keeping you full longer. Insoluble fibre is found in whole wheat, vegetables, bran, and seeds.

Is Fibermaxxing Possible With Indian Food?

Yes, fibremaxxing is possible with an Indian diet. For the unversed, traditional Indian food is naturally packed with high-fibre options without needing expensive or imported supplements.
Here are the best Indian food items you can have to achieve fibremaxxing:

1. Pulses and Legumes:

Chickpeas, kidney beans, black chickpeas, green gram and all traditional dals like masoor and moong have good fibre.

2. Millets and Grains:

Ragi, jowar, bajra, amaranth, oats and brown rice have good fibre and can help you do fibremaxxing. Swap refined wheat flour for whole wheat or multi-millet rotis.

3. Vegetables:

Leafy green vegetables like spinach, bottle gourd, carrots, peas and beans are a good source of fibre as well. The fiber acts as a prebiotic, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your gut to improve overall microbiome balance.

4. Fruits

Popular fruits like guava with skin,  papaya, apples, pears, and seasonal berries are some of the best sources of fibre and can be easily included in the daily diet.

What Are The Things You Need To Keep In Mind?

While hopping onto the fibremaxxing trend, do not suddenly increase your fibre intake too much. Do not go from 10g to 35g overnight as your gut may rebel with bloating and gas.
Increase slowly by 4- 5 g every 3-4 days. Also remember to drink 2.5-3 litres of water; otherwise, fibre will cause constipation.
You do not need imported superfoods to follow the fibermaxing trend. Your desi kitchen already has everything.
