It is truly a wonder to behold nature's very own silent light show. While regular stargazing may prove rewarding in itself, venturing into quiet, steamy locations offers a unique experience, where valleys glow from the bottom up. In the fading dusk, these secret spots become magical places glowing from the coordinated flashings of swarms of bioluminescent insects. For anyone interested in seeing one of Earth's most awe-inspiring natural wonders, here are six secret valleys that turn into firefly playgrounds at night.
6 Hidden Valleys That Come Alive With Fireflies After Dark
1. Purushwadi Valley, India
Located in the Western Ghats in the state of Maharashtra, this secluded tribal valley transforms into a fairy tale-like environment when the monsoons approach during summer. Millions of fireflies cover the treetops with their light flashes in absolute synchronisation for the purpose of attracting their mate. The best period to view this place would be between May and June.
2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA
Whereas the Smokies are renowned for their misty mountains, there exists a particular wooded valley near Elkmont which is home to one of the most elusive displays of fireflies in the world. This particular region is home to a special kind of firefly known as Photinus carolinus. The best period to view these fireflies is late May and early June.
3. Santa Elena Firefly Sanctuary, Mexico
Within the high altitude of the Tlaxcala alpine forest, this valley is covered with dense firs (oyamel). This forest provides the perfect cover for a magical nightly glow where thousands of twinkling stars sparkle on the forest floor. The best period to experience this magical place is from June to August when there is rain.
4. Shikoku Valley, Japan
There is an ancient cultural fascination with fireflies in Japan, and there are few places where they can be seen that are more idyllic than the remote river valleys of Shikoku. The Genji-botaru and the Heike-botaru both emit an ethereal green-yellow glow.
5. Waitomo Valley, New Zealand
Although known for its cave formations underground, Waitomo provides amazing bioluminescence on the surface from the green valleys and rivers that exist around the caves. Whereas there are glowworms within the caves, the natural fireflies found outdoors around the caves make the greenery and the banks of the rivers light up. This should be visited during the month of November until January.
6. Lachung Valley, Sikkim, India
Hidden within the remote mountainous regions of North Sikkim, this picturesque valley provides a relatively unknown but enchanting show under the sky at night. With the aid of humidity in the thick shrubs near the riverbeds, the high-altitude fireflies illuminate a beautiful glowing blanket on the scenic backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
