Savithri Sreedharan, the veteran Malayalam theatre and film actress who gained widespread acclaim for her memorable role as Jameela (Umma) in the 2018 film Sudani from Nigeria, passed away on September 23, 2026, at the age of 85 in Mankave, Kozhikode.
Who Was Savithri Sreedharan And How She Became A Household Name?
She started her career at the age of 16 with amateur theatre and later moved to the professional stage. She made her big film debut in 1991 with Kadavu, directed by Jnanpith Award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair.
Though she worked for decades, it was much later that she became a household name. Most people know her as Umma, the mother in Sudani from Nigeria (2018). Jameela wasn't a flashy role, but her warmth felt real and it earned her a Special Mention at the National Film Awards, the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress, a Filmfare, and an Asianet trophy, all in her seventies.
In 2019, she skipped the award ceremony along with the rest of the Sudani crew, protesting the CAA. Not a small thing to do at that stage of a career.
V. D. Satheesan, Chief Minister of Keralam, paid tribute to her legacy on Wednesday.
V D Sathesan wrote on X, "Expressing grief over the demise of renowned theater-film star Savithri Sreedharan. She, who enriched the theater stage for decades, secured a place in the hearts of Malayalis through films including 'Sudani from Nigeria'. She was an artist who amazed audiences with her natural acting. Sharing in the sorrow of family members and colleagues over the passing of Savitri Sreedharan."
Most actors peak young and fade. She built her craft for decades before the spotlight found her briefly, almost as an afterthought. Kerala's theatre and film community mourns her today with real gratitude, for a body of work spanning two entirely different creative lives.
