The character of Phunsukh Wangdu, played by Aamir Khan, was inspired by Wangchuk's life and journey towards an unconventional approach to education. But beyond the silver screen lies the far more significant story of the man who has worked as an innovator, educationalist, and environmentalist and transformed Ladakh's education with his vision and great work. One of the most recognisable voices and public speakers who stood for change in the system, Sonam Wangchuk has been an inspirational part of India's history.

Why Is Sonam Wangchuk Protesting In Delhi?

Today, Sonam's name is again in the spotlight, but not for another movie or an autobiography, but with a pure intention to bring a revolution in the education system of India. Sonam Wangchuk has been protesting in Delhi, which has reignited the conversations around governance, environmental protection, and democratic participation of the people to bring a change and stand for the right in the country.
 
 
Sonam has been on a hunger strike for the last 20 days, over education reform, accountability over repeated examination irregularities, and greater government responsiveness to public concerns, and why it matters more than ever. The hunger strike has now turned into a campaign, 'Chalo Sansad', where he has urged the youth and people of the country to stand for themselves and join him for a peaceful conversation.

What Is 'Chalo Sansad' March

On July 20, 2026, protestors from nationwide organised a march towards the Parliament during the Monsoon Session to draw the nation's attention to their demands and needs. Delhi Police has imposed restrictions across the parts leading to clashes, detentions and heightened security.
 

Who Is Sonam Wangchuk?

Sonam Wangchuk has moved the earlier campaign focused on Ladakh's environment to a wider national movement, where he is standing for the right to education and other youth centric agenda's. He has positioned this protest as a call for accountability and systematic reform that affect's student across India.
His current protest represents another chapter of his journey; regardless of immediate political outcome, it reflects a philosophy that has guided his work for years.
