In order to get clear, bright skin, we often face a common obstacle known as Pigmentation. Skin pigmentation issues are universal, affecting individuals of all ages and skin types. Whether it's due to sun exposure, hormonal changes, or genetic factors, pigmentation can significantly impact one's confidence and overall appearance. Dr Rinky Kapoor, Director and Co Founder,The Esthetic Clinics®, explains why pigmentation keeps coming back, and puts light on the reasons behind it.

Why Does Pigmentation Keep Coming Back?

Pigmentation can become troublesome as it may recur even after it has improved. This happens because the skin’s pigment producing process can be activated by various factors, including sun exposure, heat, hormonal changes, inflammation and irritation to the skin.

Common Mistakes That May Make Pigmentation Worse

Changing Products Too Frequently

One of the most common mistakes is focusing on treating pigmentation only when it appears and stopping once the skin seems clearer. Skin that is prone to pigmentation requires consistent maintenance. Broad spectrum sunscreen is crucial, and for people dealing with melasma or other types of pigmentation, using a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides can provide added protection against visible light.

Over-Exfoliating The Skin

Over exfoliation and the use of too many active ingredients are other mistakes to avoid, as they can irritate the skin barrier and cause inflammation, which can make pigmentation even more noticeable. Skincare should be tailored to one’s skin type and the underlying cause of pigmentation.

Picking Acne And Scratching The Skin

Picking, scratching or repeatedly rubbing the skin can cause dark spots, particularly if there has been acne, a rash or any form of inflammation.

Using Home Remedies

The use of harmful home remedies or unregulated lightening products can also damage the skin barrier and aggravate pigmentation. It is also important to establish why the pigmentation appeared in the first place, as there can be several underlying causes, including melasma, post acne pigmentation, irritation or certain medical conditions. Switching between different skin brightening creams without understanding the underlying issue is unlikely to deliver results.

Conclusion

Pigmentation requires both time and persistence. It may take weeks or even months for results to become visible, and it is essential to maintain adequate sun protection even when the skin looks better. Understanding what causes pigmentation and avoiding unnecessary irritation can go a long way in helping to prevent recurrence.
